the first part of our bedtime routine is a walk around the block. on nice days, we let bailey fully recline with the top down which she loves. she takes in the breeze, ogles the leaves in the trees and kicks her legs with glee. this firestarting leg action is a sign that she is really happy. she also does it in the bathtub, creating loads of splashes which makes her even happier!

roseola :-(

after bragging about how Bailey has never been sick all this time, i must have forgotten to knock on wood sometime recently because she got sick for the first time this week.  while we didn't know at first, turns out it was roseola, a non-itchy, non-dangerous relative of chicken pox common for babies.  for the first two days it was awful because you couldn't tell she was sick, but she got super duper fussy, really had a hard time falling asleep at night and during the day and just didn't seem like her old self.  we finally took her temperature and it was a couple degrees above average.  Vina took B to the doctor on Thursday who couldn't see that anything was wrong and that if her temperature went up another above 100 or 101.  She didn't seem quite as fussy Thursday night and lo and behold, red dots on Friday morning.  By mid-morning they were all over her body (and still are now).  Back to the doctor and he promptly diagnosed Roseola between seeing two other patients.  Bailey is a lot happier today but didn't sleep the best last night either.  Hopefully she can get over this virus and get back to a better sleeping routine soon.

head circumference: 41.5 cm (64%)

according to the doctor, bailey is doing quite well for her age. she appears to be healthy, happy, alert, and holding her head just fine. her mom and dad, on the other hand, need some work. ;-)

dr. felix at gotham pediatrics was his usual informative, laid-back, caesar-milan-for-babies self. our most eye-opening revelation is that we need to begin sleep training soon! apparently, a baby of bailey's age should be able to sleep for 10 hour stretches without feeding. she also should learn how to fall asleep on her own sooner rather than later. this translates to a few things we already knew but needed a semi-stern talking to. basically, we need to set/stick to a bedtime and bedtime routine and start using the modified ferber method. i guess i'm going to have to get some earplugs.

i also need to start feeding bailey every 3 hours rather than every 2 or 2.5 hours. during feedings, i am to make sure she is more focused and emptying each breast until she is full. still more oatmeal and now fenugreek tea to make sure i'm making enough milk. yummy (not).

regarding bailey's flat head, dr. felix is not concerned. after examining her head, he thinks her head is forming just fine. in fact, he thinks over time as she rolls her head from side-to-side, it will get more rounded and less flat. the AAP still recommends that babies sleep on their backs for the first 6 months of life to prevent SIDS. he thinks that the rush to seek out helmets and cranial osteopathy is often an aesthetic measure which matt and i really don't care about.

after a quick pow wow, matt and i have agreed to start sleep training a week from today. will keep you all posted on how it goes.

btw, bailey was slightly less of a drama queen this morning about her vaccines. emphasis on the word slightly.

in celebration of bailey's 4-month birthday as well as her dad's thirty-something-or-other birthday, she went on her first vacation to sturgis, michigan. although we were nervous that she would have a "psycho bailey freakout" on the flight, she actually slept for both take-off and landing (knocking on wood). the 2.5 hr drive to sturgis from detroit wasn't as easy. since she was strapped into her carseat, it was our first experience of being stripped of our go-to soothing strategies. we couldn't pick her up, give her "carpet bumpies", bounce her, or take her for a stroll. nonetheless, we managed to get to sturgis just fine.

when we arrived, bailey was excited to see her grandma merry and grandpa david again. she made herself right at home with grandma and grandpa's books, pack-and-play, dolls, stuffed animals, and vegetable basin (which she used as a bathtub). the next day, she got to meet great grandma joy and great grandpa harry for the first time. she behaved quite nicely and tricked them into believing she was a "perfect" baby. :-)
as the weather cleared on day 3, we went to uncle john hunt's house for bailey's first swim. she wore grandma lam's fancy swimsuit and rather useless swimmer diapers. thanks to the well-heated temperature of the pool, bailey loved her first swim. we were convinced she thought it was a giant bathtub. after her swim, she lounged on the trampoline with grandpa david. then played a duet with him on the piano.

that night, her godparents (aunt denise and uncle john) arrived from detroit with one of her new favorite toys, penny the penguin. as bailey didn't want to miss her dad's birthday party, she didn't get to sleep until 11PM. she even helped dad blow out the candles.

today, bailey went to church and "behaved" by falling soundly asleep. then we went to meet her uncle david, aunt erika and cousins brandon and kelsey. with all that activity, by the time we pulled out of gg joy and gg harry's driveway, bailey had most definitely been overstimulated. she fortunately slept most of the way to the airport. the plane ride back wasn't quite as smooth as the one going, but she was able to squeeze at least half an hour of entertainment out of a cool ranch doritos bag, a bottle of diet mountain dew, and the airline safety manual.

all-in-all, a wonderful first vacation!

grandma lam came to new york city again because she missed baby bailey so much. here she is at bailey's developmental movement class. this was the tactile sensation part of class with silk scarves and massage balls. in this picture, grandma lam is trying to convince bailey to try rolfing. ;-)
